Netflix Announces KPop Demon Hunters Sequel and Multiyear Partnership with Directors

Netflix has officially confirmed the development of a follow-up to its successful animated feature, “KPop Demon Hunters,” and has entered into a significant multiyear agreement with the film's directors, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. This partnership is set to encompass various animation projects, hinting at an enriched future for the beloved trio of demon slayers: Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. Maggie Kang expressed profound pride in the audience's demand for more of this Korean narrative and its characters, emphasizing that there's much more to explore within the created world. Chris Appelhans echoed this sentiment, highlighting the deep connection they feel with the characters and their universe, eagerly anticipating the opportunity to delve deeper into their evolution and to continue innovating at the intersection of music, animation, and narrative. Dan Lin, Chairman of Netflix Film, reinforced the enthusiasm, stating the vast potential for storytelling yet to be unveiled and the excitement to bring more of the “Huntr/x” experience to a global audience.

The anticipation for a second installment of “KPop Demon Hunters” has been widely discussed within industry circles for several months. Reports from various Hollywood publications indicated that Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation were actively considering a sequel following the original film's remarkable success last summer. Sony promptly engaged in negotiations to secure Kang and Appelhans for “KPop Demon Hunters 2.” The widespread popularity of the first film, which garnered over 500 million views since its premiere in June 2025 and became Netflix's most-watched movie of all time, made a sequel almost inevitable. Both Netflix and Sony, along with toy manufacturers, have been keen to capitalize on its immense popularity. The challenge now lies in delivering a worthy successor to a phenomenon that spawned a chart-topping soundtrack, received two Oscar nominations, won a Grammy, and captivated audiences across all age groups.

Although no official release date has been announced for the sequel to “KPop Demon Hunters,” indications suggest it will not arrive before 2029 at the earliest, allowing Kang, Appelhans, and their team ample time for its development. Meanwhile, fans can continue to enjoy the popular track “Golden” and relive the original “KPop Demon Hunters” experience on Netflix, with an upcoming release on the Criterion Collection. This journey of creation and expansion demonstrates the power of imaginative storytelling and cultural representation, showcasing how diverse narratives can resonate globally and foster a sense of shared excitement and discovery. The ongoing commitment to developing these stories reflects a dedication to pushing creative boundaries and enriching the world of animation with vibrant, meaningful content that celebrates cultural heritage and universal themes of courage and adventure.
